CHALLENGE:

To produce assets suitable for marketing purposes from available manufacturing data that meets RIM’s strict quality standard.
In addition, to enable a state of the art interactive user experience for several of RIM’s smartphones on the web.

SOLUTION:

We delivered 3D assets optimized for RIM’s marketing team and their creative partners. These master files adhere closely to their manufacturing counterparts (shape and materials) but are more suitable for creative use. Using these files, creative partners can quickly and easily produce content for web, broadcast and print applications that adhere to a common quality standard. Ignition also provided special components that allowed the user to manipulate the phone in real time on RIM’s website.

HOW WE DID IT:

Upon reviewing CAD data, Ignition’s modeling team built polygon models. Instead of ‘thinning’ the data, the team carefully rebuilt the device to closely mimic the CAD data within tight tolerance requirements. The resulting model was light and easy for creatives to work with.

Ignition also created low resolution models (less than 5000 polygons) with textures, lighting and shaders from these assets to create an interactive experience using Holomatix Blaze software. Additional Java and Flash programming was applied to further enhance usability of the 3D online presentation. Additional analytic programming was also developed to capture how the user interacts with the device online.
